Head coach Willie Fritz and his staff will have another opportunity to see the Bearkats in full contact action Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. when Sam Houston conducts its second scrimmage for 2013 football preseason camp.
The coaching staff is generally pleased with the progress the squad is making but look to begin narrowing down their options for candidates for the two-deep when the Kats open the season Saturday Aug. 31 against Houston Baptist.
“Saturday will give our newcomers an opportunity to show what they can do in game conditions,” Fritz said. “Our first unit looks solid. They’re going to get better and better each and every week. What we’ve got to do is get guys who can back up our starters and get some depth.”
Sam Houston has won back-to-back Southland Conference championships and reached the NCAA Division I Football Championships finals each of the past two years.
But one of the important missions in camp is to find replacements for four departed offensive line starters and in a secondary where only one starter returns.
Sam Houston State (11-4) received the No. 3 ranking in the 2013 preseason Sports Network national FCS poll earlier this week.
The Bearkats return 40 lettermen from last year’s squad including 19 players who have started at least one game in their careers.
Sam Houston returns one of the more dangerous offenses in the FCS, led by seniors, Brian Bell, Timothy Flanders and Richard Sincere.
Both season ticket packages and single game seats for all seven home games plus the Nov. 2 “Battle of the Piney Woods” with SFA at Reliant Stadium are on sale now online at www.gobearkats.com and the SHSU athletic ticket office.
