Andrew Godail pitched seven scoreless innings and catcher Anthony Azar drove in three runs to lead the Bearkats to a 10-0 win over Nicholls State in eight innings.
Godail allowed just four hits and struck out five in seven innings of work. The sophomore lefty had four walks in the game but was able to pitch out of jams and keep the Colonel hitters off balance.
Azar was 3-for-4 with a towering solo homerun in the third inning to give SHSU a 2-0 lead. The junior added RBI singles in the fourth and seventh innings.
The Kats got on the board in the first inning when third baseman Kevin Miller hit an RBI single to score centerfielder Colt Atwood. Azar’s homer doubled the lead in the third before Sam Houston broke it open in the fourth inning.
Sam Houston strung together four straight hits to start the fourth. Second baseman Ryan Farney singled and scored when first baseman Jessie Plumlee doubled to right center. Atwood singled and scored on a single by Azar.
Two more runs were manufactured in the seventh inning. Romeo Cortina replaced right fielder Ryan O’Hearn and reached on a walk. He advanced on a groundout and stole third base before scoring on a sacrifice fly. Atwood then walked and stole both first and second before scoring on another single by Azar.
The game was cut short when the Kats scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Left fielder Luke Plucheck and Cortina both singled before Farney doubled to left to score both runners. Atwood hit a hard liner that the second baseman misplayed, allowing the tenth run to score.
Alan Scott pitched a scoreless eighth inning of relief and struck out two batters.
Game two against the Nicholls Colonels is scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m. at Don Sanders Stadium.
