The Sam Houston softball team rallied from a two run deficit in the fourth inning to down the University of Houston 5-4 in a non-conference game Wednesday at the Bearkat Softball Complex in Huntsville.
Sisters Tiffany and Cecilia Castillo led the Bearkats as they evened their season mark at 15-15 and picked up their sixth victory in seven games.
Tiffany, the Kats’ shortstop, went 2-for-3 with three RBIs including her second home run of the year. Cecilia, Sam Houston’s right fielder, brought in the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning with a single to right field.
Meme Quinn (3-3) was the winning pitcher in relief. Both Quinn and Lancaster each gave up five hits.
Catcher Haley Outon slammed a shot over the center field fence with two out and one on in the top of the first inning to give the Cougars a quick 2-0 lead. Outon leads Houston this year with seven home runs.
Shortstop Tiffany Castillo evened the game at 2-2 with a second inning home run down the right field line that scored designated player Hillary Adams who led off with a walk.
Third baseman Holly Anderson led off the top of the third with a home run to center field. The home run parade continued in the fourth inning with blast over the field in right center by first baseman Jennifer Hook to give UH a 4-2 lead.
Castillo slapped a bases loaded single into left field to score pinch runner Amy Pelton in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Cougar margin to 4-3.
Second baseman Alyssa Coggins led off the bottom of the sixth with a bunt single. After a sacrifice moved her to second, Jessica Slater doubled to score Coggins and tie the game. Right fielder Cecilia Castillo singled to right to score Slate and the Kats were back in front 5-4.
Sam Houston begins a three-game weekend series at Lamar in Beaumont Saturday.
