HUNTSVILLE, TX -- Dwayne Davis scored 27 points, going 5-of-6 from three point range, to lead Southern Mississippi to a 61-49 victory over Sam Houston State in the first round of the Progressive Legends Classic Huntsville Sub-regional Monday night at Johnson Coliseum.
Jonathan Mills added 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for USM now 3-0 for the year.
Jeremy McKay lead Sam Houston (1-3) with 10 points.
Southern Mississippi lead from the start, building a 34-28 halftime lead. Sam Houston cut the lead to five points four times in the second half, the last at 49-44 with 7:23 to play, but could come no closer.
Davis was 9-of-12 from the field. USM shot 50.0% from the floor going 22-of-44. The Bearkats were limited to 26.8 percent shooting, going 11-of-41.
In earlier action in the tournament UC-Irvine defeated Liberty 64-46.
