Senior quarterback Brian Bell was named the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Bearkats to a 56-49 victory over Stephen F. Austin at Reliant Stadium Saturday.
Bell completed 19 of 29 passes for a career-best 339 yards and four touchdowns.
The senior from China Spring, Texas (China Spring H.S.) threw touchdown passes of 15, 4, 38 and 16 yards and accounted for 383 total yards of offense in guiding the Bearkats to 557 total yards in the game.
Bell is 37-10 as a starter and ranks No. 10 on the Southland’s all-time passing list with 7,835 yards. The win was his third in a row against the Lumberjacks and he has produced 1,032 yards of total offense, including 10 passing touchdowns and 10 rushing touchdowns in four games against SFA.
This season, Bell ranks third nationally and leads the Southland Conference in pass efficiency (176.2) and stands second nationally in yards per completion (16.37).
He leads an offense that ranks fourth nationally in points per game.
Sam Houston State plays Nicholls Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Bearkats’ final regular season home game at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium.
