Davis Wins Southland Women's Indoor "Student-Athlete of Year" Honor

HUNTSVILLE, TX -- Sam Houston State senior Morgan Davis has been named the Southland Conference Women's Indoor Track and Field Student-Athletes of the Year, the league office announced Tuesday.

The award marks the 13th time since 2007 that a Sam Houston State Bearkat has earned the "Student-Athlete of the Year" honor for his or her sport.

Davis, a senior from Waller, Texas, boasts a 3.63 GPA as a senior in biology. The Waller High School product came to Sam Houston State as a walk-on and ended her indoor track and field career as the Southland pentathlon champion, posting personal-best marks in all five events.

Davis is a member of the Sam Houston Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and was a delegate to the NCAA Student-Advisory Council meeting last October. The Chemistry minor is also a member of the Dean's List.

The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 12 member institutions, voted for the student-athletes of the year.

The student-athlete of the year award is presented to the one male and one female student-athlete who achieve excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and demonstrated achievement in athletics for at least two years at the nominating institution.

Indoor track and field does not select an all-academic team until after the conclusion of the outdoor track and field seasons.
