ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Sam Houston State senior running back Timothy Flanders has accepted an invite to play in the East-West Shrine Game, the longest running college all-star game in the country. The game is set for Jan. 18, 2014 at 3 p.m. and will be broadcast on NFL Network.
The two-time Southland Player of the Year, Flanders led the Bearkats to back-to-back league titles and FCS championship game appearances. He is the all-time leading rusher in Sam Houston and Southland history with 5,664 yards.
His rushing yardage total ranks No. 6 in FCS history, while his 66 rushing TD’s is third all-time in the FCS. He ranks sixth in all-time FCS scoring, with 420 points.
Flanders was a three-time finalist for the Walter Payton Award. The Midwest City, Okla., product holds 33 Sam Houston records and nine Southland records.
He is the only player in school history to be named first-team all-conference four times. He’s also the only player to ever lead the Southland in rushing four straight years.
Dustin Long is the only other Bearkat to have played in the East-West Shrine Game. Long, who led the Kats to a league title and FCS semifinals appearance in 2004, threw a 52-yard touchdown pass in the 2005 game. He was the leading passer for the West team, going 10-of-23 for 129 yards and a TD.
Flanders will be the ninth former Sam Houston State football player to appear in a college all-star game. Last season wide receiver Trey Diller played in the NFLPA All-Star Game and cornerback Dax Swanson played in the Texas vs. the Nation Game.
