Four SHSU Players Named To All-Houston Regional Baseball Team

Houston – John Hale, Jessie Plumlee, Colt Atwood and Jake Arrington were honored as all-tournament selections following Sam Houston State’s drive to the finals of the 2012 NCAA Baseball Championships Houston Regional Friday through Sunday.
The 11-player all-tournament team was selected by vote of media members covering all three days of the regional tournament at Reckling Park on the campus of Rice University.
Sam Houston State lost to Arkansas 5-4 in the first round, then knocked off Prairie View 4-2 and Rice 4-1 to reach the final game Sunday night against the Razorbacks. Arkansas advanced to the NCAA Super Regional with a 5-1 victory.
The performance equaled Sam Houston’s previous best finish in their seven NCAA baseball regional appearances. The 2007 squad also reached the finals at the Oxford Regional at Ole Miss.
Hale, a senior from Houston Lamar, hit .286 in the four games and had an outstanding defensive performance as the Kats’ catcher with 17 put outs including an important stop at the plate to prevent Rice from tying their elimination game.
Plumlee, a junior second baseman from Rowlett, was the Bearkats’ leading hitter in the regional with seven hits in 13 at bats for a .538 average. His seven hits included two doubles.
Atwood, a freshman center fielder from Katy, was Sam Houston’s second leading hitter with a .294 tournament performance with five hits in 17 at bats and four RBIs.
Arrington, a senior right fielder from Gunter, produced a two-run triple in the opening day game and posted a .286 average at the plate during the tournament.
Tournament winner Arkansas also put four players on the all-tournament team. Prairie View A&M had two players so honors and Rice had one.
