Nine Bearkat sports greats will be inducted into the Sam Houston State University men's and women's Halls of Honor at a special dinner at the Lowman Student Center Feb. 16, 2013, in Huntsville.
Jennifer Delcambre (softball), Val Greenwall (softball), Gwen Gilder Kelley (volleyball) and Linda Lowery (volleyball/coaching) are this year's inductees for the Sam Houston Women's Letter Association Hall of Honor.
Anthony Carroll (basketball), Jeff Jensen (baseball), Dedrick Manigo (football), Josh McCown (football) and Ryan Polzin (golf) are the 2012-13 inductees for the Sam Houston Lettermen's Assication Hall of Honor.
Delcambre and Greenwall both are two of the top pitchers in SHSU softball history.
Delcambre holds school career record for most pitching victories (76). She was a three-time all-Southland Conference selection (1992, 1993, 1995) and was the league's "Pitcher of the Year" in 1993 after leading the Kats to the Southland championship.
Greenwall earned NCAA Division II All-America honors in 1982 and was an NAIA World Series all-tournament selection in 1981, leading SHSU to national championships both years. She owns the Bearkats' top career pitching winning percentage (.784).
Gilder earned All-Gulf Star Conference honors in 1984 and 1985 after leading Sam Houston to back-to-back championships and NCAA Division II final four playoff appearances. She ranks among the top Bearkats in all-time kills and blocks.
Lowery is one of the pioneers in women's athletics in Texas. As a Bearkat, she played for a state championship volleyball team and won the national badminton championship. After earning both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees at Sam Houston she became a successful coach, teacher and administrator at the University of Texas and Concordia University in Austin.
The addition of these four women will bring the total of Hall of Honor members to 27. The first five women were inducted in 2007.
Carroll was a four-time All-Lone selection in 1979 through 1982, playing on basketball teams that won the Lone Star Conference in 1981 and advanced to the NAIA playoffs in both 1981 and 1982. Carroll stands as Sam Houston's fourth all-time leading scorer with 1,495 points.
Jensen was an All-Southland Conference first baseman in 1992 and 1994. He led the Bearkats in hitting, total hits and home runs two years in a row. He was drafted by the Phillies following his college career.
Manigo was an All-American and two-time All-Southland linebacker. He is one of only three Bearkats to lead the team in tackles three years in a row, ending his career in 1996 ranked fifth with 330 stops.
McCown quarterbacked Sam Houston State to the 2001 Southland Conference championship, the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I playoffs and a No. 7 final ranking. He went on to a decade-long career in the NFL.
Ryan Polzin was Southland Conference "Newcomer " and "Golfer of the Year" in 2000 and earned all-league honors three years. He holds the SHSU record for lowest season stroke average (72.93).
This year's additions bring the total number of members in the Lettermen's Hall of Honor to 173.
