Southeastern Louisiana comes into Saturday’s Southland Conference football showdown with Sam Houston State riding a seven-game winning streak.
That’s longest string of consecutive victories by a Lions football team since 1961.
A high-powered offense that has been energized by the addition of quarterback Bryan Bennett, a transfer from Oregon, has Southeastern Louisiana one more victory away from clinching the program’s first Southland Conference football title.
“They’ve had a lot of talent on their roster the last several years, but Bennett has been the final piece of the puzzle,” Sam Houston head coach Willie Fritz said. “They won five of their last eight games last year and returned 18 starters. They have an excellent football team.”
Southeastern Louisiana stands No. 14 in the FCS rankings and is in sole possession of first place with a 5-0 league record. Sam Houston and McNeese State are tied for second place with identical 4-1 marks.
Bennett, who played 18 games for the Ducks before transferring to Southeastern Louisiana, has rushed for 763 yards and 13 touchdowns and passed for 2,069 yards and 13 scores.
“He is most dangerous when he scrambles out of the pocket and makes something happen,” Fritz said. “They have some excellent receivers and running backs to go along with him as well.”
Running back Rasheed Harrell is a threat as well with 519 yards rushing and seven touchdowns. Jeff Smilty is the top receiver for the Lions with 38 catches for 481 yards and five scores.
Southeastern Louisiana is out-scoring their opponents 40.5 points to 22.1. The Lion defense limited Stephen F. Austin’s potent offense to 315 total yards.
The Lion defense is led by senior linebacker Cqulin Hubert, a transfer from Texas Tech. Hubert has totaled 53 tackles this season including a team-leading nine tackles for losses.
“It’s going to be exciting playing at a packed house at Strawberry Stadium Saturday afternoon,” Fritz said. “We’re going to have to be at the top of our game.”
