San Marcos – Senior Kaylee Hawkins led the Bearkats with 16 kills as Sam Houston fought back to take the match to five sets before falling in a non-conference volleyball match at Texas State Tuesday night.
The Bobcats held off rally and rally for a narrow 25-22 12-25 255-15 21-25 16-14 victory over Sam Houston. The loss evens the Kats’ record at 2-2.
San Marcos jumped out to a quick 7-0 led in the final set, but the Bearkats rebounded, winning five points on JulieHaas’s serve and tying the set 14-14 on a kill by Hawkins and a Bobcat hitting error. But Texas State put together two more points for the victory.
Deveney Wells-Gibson added 10 kills to the Bearkats’ team total of 45. Kendall Cleveland and Cherise Coleman each produced six kills.
Texas State, led by Alexandria Simms with 10, totaled 48 kills.
Hawkins also led the SHSU defense with 23 digs. Wells-Gibson led the Bearkat front line with five blocks.
Sam Houston State now heads to Lawrence, Kansas, where the Bearkats will participate in the Kansas Jayhawk Invitational Tournament Friday and Saturday.
