SHSU soccer falls to Rutgers at Texas A&M Soccer Invitational

College Station - Sam Houston held No. 16 ranked Rutgers scoreless for 61 minutes and had several good scoring opportunities, but in the end the Scarlet Knights prevailed 2-0 in SHSU's second match Sunday in the Texas A&M Soccer Invitational.

Rachel Cole scored on a cross from Jonelle Filigno at the 61:58 mark and Brielle Buis added a late goal at 87:08 from six yards out to account for Rutgers' scoring.

Before Rutgers scored, Sam Houston shots twice hit the cross bar. The first shot off the bar came on a free kick by Kayla Anderson from 20 yards out in the 36th minute.

The second was in the 57th minute when Shelby McDaniel took a cross from Kirby Zak on the left wing and turned a fired a right-footed blast .

"We created a lot of good opportunities on offense today," SHSU head coach Tom Brown said. "Kayla fired off a great free kick. Shelby showed so much skill on her shot not to be rewarded. We've just got to keep bringing it every game like we did today and good things are going to start happening."

Michele McCollough was credited with 10 saves on Rutgers' 21 shots as the Bearkats' goalkeeper.

Sam Houston State totaled nine shots.
