Extending their winning streak to 12 games including a non-conference victory over No. 9 Rice and three consecutive Southland Conference series sweeps, Sam Houston State moved up to No. 20 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll and, for the first time this season, jumped into Baseball America's Top 20 rankings at the No. 24 position.
The Bearkats have been ranked in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll each of the past three weeks.
Sam Houston owns a four-game lead over second place Northwestern State after a series sweep of the Demons last week. The sweep marked the first time in the Bearkats' 25-years as a member of the Southland Conference to post three consecutive league series sweeps.
SHSU started the string with a sweep of 2012 preseason favorite Texas State then took three on the road at UTSA before the sweep of the Demons this past Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Kats stand 13-2 in league play.
Designated hitter Anthony Azar has been named as the Southland Conference "Hitter of the Week" each of the past two Mondays.
The "Collegiate Baseball" newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
