Sam Houston State designated hitter Anthony Azar has been named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week for the second consecutive week, the league office announced Monday.
Azar led Sam Houston to a perfect 4-0 week that included win over No. 9 Rice to go with a three-game sweep of Northwestern State last weekend.
It was the Bearkats' third consecutive conference sweep, a feat never before accomplished in the school's 25 years as a conference member.
The junior from The Woodlands was 7 for 13 (.539) against the Demons and batted .412 in the four games last week. His two-run homer started Bearkat rally in the sixth and hit in 11th inning moved the winning run to third in a 4-3 win Friday that clinched the series win. He also batted in the go-ahead run in Saturday's 5-3 victory.
Azar has hit .480 to lead Bearkats in 12 game win streak, the longest as a Southland Conference member.
Next action for the Sam Houston baseball team will be a three-game Southland series with the Lamar Cardinals Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Beaumont.
The Bearkats return to Don Sanders Stadium for their next home game on Tuesday, April 17, when SHSU plays host to the Houston Cougars in a 6:30 p.m. non-conference clash.
