SHSU's Konner Tucker Named Academic All-Southland Conference

HUNTSVILLE, TX -- Konner Tucker, junior guard from Fort Worth for Sam Houston State University, has been named as one of the 10 members of the 2012 Academic All-Southland Conference squad for men's basketball.

Tucker, a kinesiology major with a 3.05 overall grade point average, was the top scorer for the Bearkats this season with 12.0 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. He scored in double figures in 23 of Sam Houston's 32 games during the 2011-12 season. The Bearkats earned their 10th consecutive Southland Conference tournament appearance in March.

Tucker becomes the 20th Sam Houston men's basketball player to earn Academic All-Southland Conference honors since the 1998 season. During the past nine years, a total of 10 Bearkat men's basketball student-athletes have receive Academic All-Southland honors a total of 20 times.

All 10 all-academic selections are first-time recipients of the honor. Joining Tucker on the Academic All-Southland first team are UTSA sophomore Jeromie Hill, Texas State senior Brooks Ybarra, Sam Houston State junior Konner Tucker, Lamar senior Brandon Davis and Stephen F. Austin sophomore Desmond Haymon.

Second team honorees include Northwestern State sophomore Gary Stewart, UTSA sophomore Igor Nujic, Texas State senior Jordan Kirschke, Southeastern Louisiana sophomore Onochie Ochie and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi sophomore Ted Wang.

The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic advisors from each Southland Conference university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
