Sam Houston State Basketball at ORU Thursday

Both the Sam Houston men and women begin a challenging Southland Conference road swing Thursday and Saturday as the Bearkats face Oral Robert in Tulsa and Central Arkansas in Conway.

The women enter Thursday’s 5 p.m. match-up with ORU holding a one-half game lead in the league race. Sam Houston, 13-10 for the year and 9-2 in Southland action, sit atop the standings. The Eagles are in third place with an 11-11 season mark and an 8-4 conference slate.

The Bearkat women defeated Oral Roberts 54-47 in Huntsville on January 19. Sequeena Thomas scored 18 points and pulled down 20 rebounds while Britni Martin scored 19.

Jaci Bigham led the Eagles with 25 points.

The Sam Houston men also face a tough foe. The Oral Roberts men stand in third place in the Southland with a 14-10 season record and a 9-3 Southland mark. Sam Houston is in fifth place at 13-10 and 6-5.

The ORU had to go to overtime to defeat the Bearkats 65-61 in Huntsville in their first meeting. Shawn Glover and Warren Niles were the top scorers in the game, both with 17 points. Marquel McKinney led Sam Houston with 11 points. The men’s game will tip off at 7:30 p.m.

The women’s game will be broadcast live by 104.9 FM The Hits while the men’s game will air on KSAM 101.7 FM.

Sam Houston travels to Central Arkansas Saturday with the women tipping off at 2 p.m. and the men at 4:30 p.m.
