HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- Tiffany Castillo, Ashley Isbell and Angelica Gonzales each had two hits as Sam Houston run-ruled Texas Southern 8-0 in a five-inning non-conference softball game in Huntsville Wednesday afternoon.
The victory ups the Bearkats’ record to 29-19 for the year while Texas Southern dropped to 30-14.
With a Southland Conference showdown series with league leader McNeese State coming up Saturday and Sunday, head coach Bob Brock rested several of his starters.
“It was great to see some of the younger players have the opportunity to have some success and they came through,” Brock said.
Alyssa Gregg produced a two-run walk-off double in the bottom of the fifth inning to scored Gonzales and Alyssa Coggins who both had singled. Isbell’s fifth inning double scored Castillo.
The Bearkats struck quickly in the bottom of the first, picking up three runs on three hits and an error. Jessica Slater, who led off with a single, scored on an error on an Amy Pelton sacrifice bunt attempt. Ashley Isbell and Angelica Gonzalez brought in the next two runs with back-to-back doubles.
Castillo fired a shot over the center field fence for her seventh home run of the season in the bottom of the third. The homer scored Pelton who led off the inning taking first after being hit by a pitch.
Shelby Lancaster (10-7) was the winning pitcher for the Bearkats, posting her 12th complete game of the season.
The Bearkats and McNeese State will meet in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday and compete the series Sunday with a 1 p.m. single game.
Sam Houston stands third in the Southland Conference with a 14-7 league record while the Cowgirls stand atop the league standings with a 16-3 mark.
The series will close out the Kats’ 2013 home schedule. The regular season will conclude the next weekend with a three-game series at second place Northwestern State.
