Winners in five of their last six games and tied for first place in the Southland Conference, the Sam Houston women’s basketball team is on a roll right now.
One of the big reasons why are record-breaking performances by two of it’s seniors.
Thursday night in the 64-48 victory over Central Arkansas, Sequeena Thomas broke a 30-year old record as the senior from Allentown, Penn., became Sam Houston State’s all-time women’s basketball rebound leader.
Thomas pulled down 14 boards to up her career total to 970. Altanette Denley set the previous school record with 962 boards from 1980 to 1983.
On Nov. 30, in a 78-50 victory over Texas A&M-Commerce, Thomas became the 13th Bearkat to score 1,000 points. Her total of 1,185 points now ranks her as Sam Houston’s seventh all-time leading scorer. Thomas also holds the school record for career blocks with 143 in her 103 appearances in SHSU’s Orange and White.
Britni Martin stands as Sam Houston’s second-leading all-time scorer with 1,605 points. Martin already has set the career record for most three-point baskets (280) and stands third in all-time Bearkat assists (381).
The pair will look to add to those marks Saturday when Sam Houston plays host to Oral Roberts at 1:30 p.m. at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
The contest matches two of the four teams tied for first place in the Southland Conference. The Kats, the Golden Eagles, Lamar and Central Arkansas all own 4-1 league marks.
Oral Roberts is the newest member of the Southland Conference. The Eagles own league wins over Southeastern Louisiana, Northwestern State, Stephen F. Austin and A&M-Corpus Christi.
Kevi Luper, a 5-10 guard, leads ORU with 18.5 points per game.
