On the same day the Bearkat women’s bowling team left Huntsville for their second appearance in the NCAA Elite Eight in the three-year history of the program, Sam Houston moved up one notch in the NCAA Division I national rankings.
The Bearkats moved up to No. 6 in the National Ten Pins Coaches Association (NTCA) poll. Sam Houston’s highest ranking ever has been No. 5.
Defending NCAA champion Maryland-Eastern Shore moved into the top position. Nebraska stands No. 2 followed by Central Missouri, Arkansas State and Vanderbilt.
Sam Houston State and Wisconsin-Whitewater traded places for sixth and seventh place and Fairleigh Dickinson stayed in the eighth spot. The top eight rankings mirror the recent NCAA announcement for this week’s national championship in Canton, Mich.
Stephen F. Austin kept the No. 9 position but Adelphi leaped from No. 14 to complete the poll’s Top 10.
Sam Houston owns a 97-36 record in dual matches this season.
Action in the 2013 NCAA Elite Eight begins Thursday with first round round robin play. The traditional team-play action will decide seedings for bracket action Friday. The national championship will be decided in double elimination bracket play using the best of seven baker format.
The final 2013 NTCA poll will be released following the NCAA championship in Canton, Michigan.
