Alyssa Coggins had a walk-up RBI single to win the first game and Amy Pelton added a walk-up RBI hit-by-pitcher in the nightcap as Sam Houston swept a Southland Conference softball doubleheader from Houston Baptist by identical scores of 5-4.
The first game win came in extra innings while the second ended in the seventh inning.
The early contest marked Sam Houston’s first Southland series opening game win in five tries this season. The Bearkats totaled 13 hits but had to go to extra innings as they left 11 runners on base and allowed two HBU runs to score on errors.
Second baseman Alyssa Coggins’ walk-off RBI single in the ninth scored catcher Ashley Isbell who, along with pinch hitter Angelica Gonzales, was hit by a pitch to reach base.
The victory was Sam Houston’s seventh in eight extra-inning games this year. Pitcher Meme Quinn (7-4) went all nine innings for the win in her fourth complete game of the year. Quinn faced 36 batters, striking out 10.

Center fielder Lauren Schwirtlich tripled then scored on an error with two out in the top of the second inning. First baseman Kim Damian tied the game 2-2 in the fifth with an RBI single.
HBU answered in the sixth as left fielder Kirsten Schwirtlich singled, reached third on a single by Victoria Granchelli and scored on an outfield error. Cecilia Castillo’s sacrifice fly to right field tied the contest again in the bottom of the sixth.
An RBI single by third baseman Shay Orsak put HBU in the lead lead 4-3 in the top of the seventh. Isbell forced extra innings with a solo shot to left field in the bottom of the seventh, her third home run of the year.
