HUNTSVILLE, TX -- Sam Houston senior defender Kayla Anderson was named as Southland Conference women’s soccer “Defensive Player of the Week” Tuesday, the league office announced.
Northwestern State junior forward Yanci earned the offensive award while Stephen F. Austin senior Lacey Lee was selected as goalkeeper of the week.
Anderson paced the Bearkat backline that faced two overtime matches over the weekend. The senior from Katy, Texas (Cinco Ranch H.S.), helped Sam Houston shutout North Texas in regulation and preserve the shutout win against Texas Southern.
The 1-0 win against Texas Southern marked the second time in four games Sam Houston kept its opponent off the scoreboard. Anderson played in all 200 minutes of both matches for Sam Houston.
The next action for Sam Houston State will be an appearance in the Texas A&M Soccer Invitational this weekend. Friday the Bearkats take on Saint Mary’s University of California. Sunday SHSU faces nationally-ranked Rutgers.
