Sam Houston Tracksters Qualify for NCAA National Championship Meet In Two Events

School records and national semifinals qualifying performances in the 4x400 relay and the triple jump highlighted action for the Sam Houston State men’s track and field team at the NCAA Division I West Preliminary Championships hosted by the University of Texas in Austin.

Charles White set a school record with a mark of 51 feet, 10.5" in the triple jump to earn a trip to Des Moines, Iowa, in June for the NCAA Division I semifinals Friday evening.

Saturday night the relay team of Trey Jones, Brian Helaire, Jessie Martinez and D J Hayes punched their tickets for Des Moines as well as they broke the SHSU 4x400 relay record with a 3:06.51 clocking, placing fourth in their heat and earning a tenth place finish overall.
White finished fifth in the NCAA Division I West Preliminary triple jump competition Friday. He fouled on his first and third attempts but produced the record-setting mark on his second try. He passed on his last three attempts.
Two other Bearkats just missed trips to Des Moines. D. J. Hayes placed 14th in the 400 meter quarterfinals, two spots away from qualifying for the semifinals. His time of 46.50 seconds was just 0.15 behind 12th place finisher James Wood of Oklahoma.
Matthew Viverette advanced to the quarterfinals in both hurdles events. He was 24th in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 53.15and 22nd in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.10 Saturday
Karique Stephens was 18th in the triple jump with a mark of 50' 6.25", Trevor Sealy finished 30th in the hammer with a throw of 190' 03" and Jarrick Wright was 37th in the 200 meter dash with a mark of 21.58.
Henry Jordan was 20th in the men's long jump and Charles White placed 37th. White jumped 23' 9" while Jordan posted a mark of 24' 7.25". The top 12 in the end advanced to the NCAA semifinals with the 12th place distance being 25' 2.75".
Jordan also competed in the 100 meter dash first round, placing 40th with a time of 10.58. Jarrick Wright was 47th with a 10.78 clocking. Preston Sanders finished 23rd in the shot put with a mark of 57' 0.75".
In each of the individual running events, the top three finishers in each of the six heats and the next nine fastest times will advance to the quarterfinal round. Only 12 competitors will advance from the quarterfinals to the NCAA Division I national semifinals in Des Moines, Iowa, beginning Wednesday, June 6.
In the relays, the top three times from each of the three heats and the next three fastest teams will advance to Des Moines. The top 12 finishers in each of the field event quarterfinals take the trip to Iowa.
