The pairings for the 2012 Southland Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament are set and No. 7 seed Sam Houston State will take on No. 2 seed Texas State in the first round.

Host team Stephen F. Austin is the top seed for the 2012 event. The tournament gets underway Thursday at the Schlief Tennis Complex in Nacogdoches, Texas.

The Jacks, who are ranked No. 45 nationally, won their first-ever regular season title, finishing the season with a 10-1 record in conference play. Texas State (9-2) earned the No. 2 seed and will be aiming to win its first tournament title.

No. 3 UT Arlington leads all schools in conference titles with six and will seek to defend its 2011 tournament championship. The Mavericks will take on No. 6 Lamar on April 26 at 11 a.m. Lamar won its only tournament title in 2008.

Thursday's other early match pits Texas State against No. 7 Sam Houston State (5-6). The Bearkats are making their eighth consecutive tournament appearance.

Thursday's remaining matches feature No. 4 Northwestern State (8-3) against No. 5 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (8-3) and No. 1 Stephen F. Austin (10-1) vs. No. 8 UTSA (4-7).

Northwestern State has made it to the championship match twice, winning the title in 2010, while A&M-Corpus Christi hopes to finish its most successful season in school history with its first tournament title. UTSA won its only tournament title in 2002. Both matches are scheduled for 2 p.m.

The winners from the opening-round matches will play Friday for a spot in the tournament championship on Saturday at 1 p.m., with the winner earning the league's automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.
Admission to all tournament matches is free.
