Sam Houston pitcher Caleb Smith has been named as the Southland Conference baseball Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Smith notched his first complete-game shutout of the season, allowing a trio of hits against Southeastern Louisiana in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader.
The junior from Huntsville, Texas (Huntsville H.S.), struck out three batters and pitched around two Bearkat errors while inducing two double plays.
Smith’s win clinched the series for Sam Houston and allowed Sam Houston to maintain its two-game lead in the league standings. Smith sports a 7-4 record to go with a 2.84 earned-run average. Opponents are hitting .189 against him this season.
The Bearkats host Central Arkansas for a three-game weekend series starting Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Two wins will secure a second consecutive outright Southland Championship.
All three games this weekend are “Youth Baseball Days.” Any youth baseball and softball player who wears their uniform to the game will receive free admission and parent’s tickets start at $6.
Friday is the final “First Financial Family Night” where each purchase of a reserved seat gets a free hot dog, popcorn, and drink.
Saturday’s game will be followed with a team autograph session and kids will have the opportunity to run the bases.
