A&M’s Manziel Earns SEC Weekly Honors Again

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Quickly establishing himself as one of college football’s most dynamic players, Texas A&M freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel was named Southeastern Confererence Offensive Player of the Week and Co-Freshman of the Week by the conference office on Monday.

For Manziel, from Kerrville Tivy High School, it was his third straight SEC Freshman weekly honor and fourth in six games, and it was his second Offensive Player honor.

Named the Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week on Sunday, Manziel generated 576 total yards in a down-to-the-wire 59-57 win over No. 23 Louisiana Tech that started on Saturday and ended in the wee hours of Sunday morning. Manziel became the first player in SEC history to have two 500-yard plus total offense efforts having earlier set the conference mark with 557 total yards against Arkansas.

Manziel accounted for six touchdowns as he passed for 395 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for a career-high 181 yard and three more scores. Facing a third-and-24 from the A&M 28, Manziel’s 72-yard touchdown run with 2:04 remaining provided the winning margin against the Bulldogs. It was A&M’s first win over a ranked opponent away from Kyle Field since the Aggies beat No. 21 Texas Tech, 52-30, in Lubbock, Texas in 2009.

As the No. 20 Aggies prepare for next Saturday’s 11 a.m. showdown with No. 6 LSU, Manziel ranks No. 2 nationally in total offense (392.7 yards/G), No. 2 in points responsible for (24.0), No. 10 in passing efficiency (162.80 rating), No. 13 in scoring (10.0 points/G) No. 17 in rushing (112.7 yards/G), No. 20 in passing yards (280.0 yards/G), No. 71 in all-purpose yardage (112.7 yards/G).

He is the nation’s top freshman in points responsible for, total offense, scoring, passing efficiency, passing yards and rushing.

In other news, the 5-1 Aggie football team was ranked No. 18 in the first edition of the Bowl Championship Series standings, which was released on Sunday night. Texas A&M is one of seven SEC teams in the top 20 of the initial BCS standings. In the Top 25 polls, the Aggies are ranked No. 19 in the USA Today head coaches poll and No. 20 in the Associated Press media poll.
