COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Eight players from the Texas A&M women’s tennis team begin competition today at the ITA/USTA Regional Championships in Fort Worth. The event will be held at Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center and will run through Monday.
The regional features some of the top players from across the state, with the winners advancing to face other regional winners across the country at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 7-10 in Flushing, N.Y.
A&M’s Stefania Hristov and Cristina Stancu are the No. 1 seeded pair in the 64-team doubles draw. The duo, ranked No. 8 in the nation in the ITA preseason rankings, received a first-round bye and will begin play in the round of 32 at 1:30 p.m. today.
The Aggie tandem of sophomore Anna Mamalat and freshman Rutuja Bhosale is seeded No. 9 in the tournament. They also received a first-round bye and begin second-round action at 1:30 today.
First round doubles matches got underway at 8 a.m. this morning, including two matches involving A&M teams. Sophomore Paula Deheza will be seeing her first action of the fall season and will be paired with freshman Mason Strickland. The duo will face Anna Kate Anderson and Yana Erkeeva of SMU in the opening round of 64. In addition, A&M freshmen Saska Gavrilovska and Jana McCord are slated to face Bella Costa and Natalie Petaia of Sam Houston State.
Stancu, who has already earned a berth in singles at the national indoor championships after reaching the semifinals at the prestigious Riviera/ITA All-American Championships earlier this month in California, is the No. 2 seed in the 128-player singles draw. She received a first round bye and will begin singles play at 3:30 p.m. today against the winner between Carolina Maso of Lamar and Bella Costa of Sam Houston State.
Mamalat and Hristov, seeded ninth and 17th, respectively, in singles, also received byes in the first round and are scheduled to take the court at 3:30. Mamalat will face the winner between Natalie Petaia of Sam Houston State and Nada Marjanovic of Abilene Christian, and Hristov will take on the winner between Eva Dench of Texas State and Sam Czarnika of Texas Tech.
Deheza opens first round play at 10 a.m. against Didi Fatchikova of Texas Pan American. Strickland faces Sarah Savedra of Incarnate Word at 11 a.m., and Bhosale and Gavrilovska take the court at 11:30 a.m., with Bhosale facing Micah Hermsdorf of Abilene Christian and Gavrilovska taking on Angeles De Los Rios.
