The Texas A&M football team’s 58-10 victory over Arkansas, its first-ever Southeastern Conference victory, has the honors rolling in for the Aggie staff and players.
First-year Aggie head coach Kevin Sumlin was named SEC Coach of the Week by SouthernPigskin.com after his A&M squad exploded for the biggest scoring outburst in the long series between the Aggies and the Razorbacks. Sumlin’s Aggies produced a whopping 716 total yards, which is the third-highest output in school history, and set a school record with 498 passing yards. Defensively, the Aggies held the Razorbacks scoreless for the final three quarters as A&M scored the final 51 points of the game.
Senior safety Steven Terrell (Allen, Texas) was named National Defensive Player of the Week by College Sports Madness and National Defensive Back of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) after intercepting two of Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson’s aerial offerings, forcing a fumble and making six tackles. Terrell’s two pickoffs were converted into 10 points by the Aggies.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel (Kerrville, Texas) took SEC Offensive Player and Freshman of the Week honors from SouthernPigskin.com and honorable mention National Quarterback of the Week honors from the CFPA after shattering school records for passing yards and total offense against Arkansas. Manziel also broke the SEC record for total offense. He finished with 453 passing yards and three TDs on 29-of-38 attempts. Coupled with his 104 rushing yards, Manziel generated 557 total yards.
