MANSFIELD, Texas --- The Texas A&M men’s swimming and diving team stands in second place in the team standings after the first day of the Southwest Collegiate Plunge on Friday at the Mansfield ISD Natatorium.

The Aggies scored 398 points and trail Texas (452 points) and lead SMU (356) and Incarnate Word (292).

“We need to get our hands to the wall first in some of these races,” Aggie head coach Jay Holmes said. “Hayden (Jones) did his job with the win in diving, and we need more of that. We have a lot of depth and it shows, but we need to get some more wins rather than second places. But we came up here to race, and I’m happy with the way we got up on the blocks and competed.”

Leading the way for A&M was Jones, who posted his third win of the young season with 379.20 points. Earlier this week, Jones was named Southeastern Conference Diver of the Week after sweeping the 1- and 3-meter dives in dual meets against South Carolina and North Carolina in Columbia, S.C.

Junior Omar Enriquez, the school record holder in the race, contributed a runner-up finish in the “A” final of the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:31.65, while freshman Mateo Muzek took fifth in 4:36.92. Enriquez and Muzek also shined in the 200 back, with Muzek taking second in 1:51.24 and Enriquez right behind in third with a time of 1:52.75. A&M also took second and third in the 200 back “B” final with freshman Alexander Theochardidis (1:54.04) and junior Donnie Walker (1:57.31).

A&M took third and fourth in the 200 IM with school record holder Simon Frank taking third in 1:55.19 and John Wagner right behind in 1:55.50. In the 100 freestyle, senior John Dalton took third in 45.40 and senior Austin Wilson was sixth in 46.80. In the 100 butterfly, senior Nick Han took third in 50.10 and junior Henrik Lindau contributed a fifth place finish in 51.63. In the 100 breaststroke Wagner took fifth in 59.23 and sophomore Hayden Duplechain was seventh in 1:00.64.

The Aggies closed out the first night of competition with a runner-up finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The foursome of Kyle Troskot, Lindau, Dalton and Wilson hit the wall in a time of 1:22.49. A&M opened the meet with third- and fifth-place finishes in the 400 medley relay. The foursome of Theocharidis, Wagner, Lindau and Dalton was third in 3:24.95 and the relay of Frank, Duplechain, Han and Wilson finished in 3:28.28.
