ATHENS, Ga.—Texas A&M women’s golf senior Mary Michael Maggio birdied four times, including three on the back nine, and eagled the 17th hole Sunday to rally from 15th place to finish first individually at the Liz Murphey Fall Preview hosted by Georgia.

As a team the Aggies tied with UCLA for eighth overall, finishing with a three-round score of 893 (+29) after shooting 10 over-par in the third round Sunday. North Carolina won the event with a score of 876 (+12). Alabama (+16) finished second and Auburn (+19), Southern Cal (+19), Georgia (+23), Oklahoma (+24) and Duke (+24) followed closely. Denver placed 10th with a score of 895 (+31), followed consecutively by Tennessee (+35), Virginia (+36), Purdue (+38), Tulane (+39), Vanderbilt (+40), LSU (+41), California (+44) and South Carolina (+47).

“We’re close, very close,” A&M head coach Trelle McCombs said. “There’s more work to be done, but this was a good measuring stick for us.”

Maggio won the tournament with a three-day score of 213 (-3) and shot five-under par during her closing round. The win was the second career individual victory for Maggio, who was the top medalist at the 2012 Big 12 Championships at Lawrence Country Club last April.

Senior Sarah Beth Davis recorded a score of 227 (+11) while juniors Natalie Reeves, Chelsea Mocio and Katerina Ruzickova rounded out the Aggie contingency, each ending play with a three-round total of 230 (+14).

“I am so proud of Mary and her perseverance today,” McCombs added. “What a super finish! We tee it up again next Friday in Knoxville and I look forward to seeing this team build off what they learned this week.”

Next on the schedule for the Aggies is the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate in Knoxville, Tenn., Oct. 12-14.
