OXFORD, Miss. – The 15th-ranked Texas A&M softball team (37-13, 8-12 SEC) took the series victory from Ole Miss (23-31, 3-21 SEC) with a 5-1 win in the Southeastern Conference series finale on Sunday.
The Aggies leave Oxford with a new program home run record, hitting 85 long balls so far this season through 50 games. The previous record was 81, set in 2011. The Aggies have also turned an impressive 16 double plays in 2013, including two today and four on the weekend.
A hard-hit double to left field that slammed off the top of the wall by junior Taran Tyler scored two runs for the Aggies in the top of the second. Junior Cassie Tysarczyk reached on a two-out walk and was joined on base when senior Meagan May singled through the left side. Tyler’s hit sent the pair home for the 2-0 lead.
The Rebels scored a payback run in the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout. The unearned run narrowed the A&M lead to 2-1.
A solo home run by May in the top of the fourth expanded the A&M lead to 3-1. May was 2-for-3 on the day with a home run, a walk and two runs scored.
In the top of the sixth, Tysarczyk plated the 4-1 run on an RBI single. The Aggie right fielder was a perfect 3-for-3 on the day with two singles, a double, a walk, a run scored and one RBI. Freshman Cali Lanphear reached on a one-out double and took third on a fly out before Tysarczyk sent her home on the hit to centerfield.
Junior Jenna Stark gave the Aggies their final run of the game, blasting a two-out solo home run over left field for the 5-1 lead. The Aggies end the weekend with 85 home runs on the season, a program best.
After the leadoff runner reached on a bunt single in the bottom of the fourth, the Aggies grabbed two quick outs as they turned their 15th double play of the season. A 16th double play was turned to end the bottom of the fifth, making it the eighth two-out production in the past two weekends.
Sophomore Lauren Ainsley (12-6) was dominant in the circle, giving up just one unearned run on seven hits and a walk while fanning seven hitters for the win. Ole Miss starter Erinn Jayjohn worked 4 2/3 innings for the loss, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and two walks.
