HOOVER, Alabama -- No. 23 Texas A&M will travel to the SEC Championship, for the first time in its history, set to take place at the Greystone Golf & Country Club - Founders Course in Hoover, Alabama this weekend.
“We see what the rest of the teams here at Texas A&M have done in SEC play and at their championships and that pumps us up to go out this weekend and take pride in representing the Aggies,” Texas A&M head coach Trelle McCombs said. “When we see other teams playing well it really fires us up and makes us dig a little deeper to contribute to the athletic success here at Texas A&M.”
The Aggies return to the course following a ninth place finish in the stacked PING/ASU Invitational last week. This weekend will feature a similarly dangerous challenge against possibly the most competitive field in the country.
Six teams in the tournament (No. 2 Alabama, No. 5 Arkansas, No. 7 Florida, No. 9 Vanderbilt, No. 18 Georgia and No. 23 Texas A&M) are ranked in the top 25 of the most recent Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, while five more squads (No. 28 LSU, No. 31 Tennessee, No. 32 Kentucky, No. 38 South Carolina and No. 39 Auburn) are represented in the poll’s top 50 teams.
“Playing in Arizona last weekend against such a tough field gives us a great idea of what the pressure is like to play in a big-time event,” McCombs added. “I think the SEC Championship is one of those big-time events, just look at the depth at the tournament with us being ranked 23rd and being the sixth highest ranked team at this tournament.”
The Greystone Golf & Country Club – Founders Course is a par-72 course that stretches 6,401 yards and will host the SEC Women’s Golf Championships again next season.
Representing the Aggies at the SEC Championship will be seniors Sarah Beth Davis and Susy Grunden along with juniors Chelsea Mocio, Natalie Reeves and Katerina Ruzickova.
“I feel really good about how the team is playing at the moment,” McCombs said. “We got a real boost with Susy Grunden coming into the lineup last week and having a great tournament. Hopefully that momentum from Arizona continues to play in Alabama.”
The opening round of the SEC Championship is slated to begin at 8:00 a.m. (CT) on Friday with the Aggies playing in the second group alongside Georgia and Vanderbilt, which will begin on the No. 1 tee box at 8:50 a.m. (CT).
