BRYAN, Texas -- The third annual Aggie Legends Golf Classic took place this afternoon at Traditions Club.
117 golfers participated in the event, including R.C. Slocum the winningest football coach in Texas A&M history.
The tournament was hoping to raise $20,000 for the Lettermen's Association at Texas A&M. That's a $5,000 dollar increase from 2011 and $10,000 over what was raised during the tournaments first year back in 2010 with 82 golfers participating.
According to tournament organizer Ericka Erickson, nearly every sport had a letterman in attendance today.
This morning Oakland Raiders punter Shane Lechler reminded Coach Slocum of story that is relevant today. "Shane told me a story that I had forgotten. When he came on his official recruiting visit to A&M, Shane Lechler was his (Dennis Allen's) student host. Now Dennis is the head coach in Oakland and Shane is playing for him. So that's a pretty good reunion for those guys."
Coach Slocum added with Shane preparing for his 13th NFL season, he deserves some of the credit for his pro football success since he did talk the former East Bernard quarterback into switching positions to punter.
Not only did that piece of advice pay off big for Shane, but he was also able to meet his future wife (the former Erin Gibson, a Texas A&M volleyball player) while going to school at A&M..
Shane wasn't the only football player to find his wife on the Aggie volleyball team. His good friend Shea Holder, an A&M offensive lineman, met his wife (the former Farah Mensik) on the volleyball team too.
The two couples were playing golf together under the team name of Oakland Raiders. They live about 4 miles apart outside of Katy and have remained close after their college days at Texas A&M.
