COLLEGE STATION -- The three-time defending Big 12 champion Texas A&M soccer team will host the United States Under-20 National Team in an exhibition match on Wednesday evening at the Aggie Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is schedule for 6 p.m.
“This is a neat opportunity for our players to gain another great soccer experience in Aggieland,” commented A&M head coach G Guerrieri. “It’s always a special situation whenever you get to play against a national team from anywhere in the world, but it’s that much more special when you get the chance to play a side as great as Team USA.”
The match will be the Aggies third full-sided game of their non-traditional spring season. On March 23, A&M fell to BYU 1-0, despite having outshot the Cougars on the night. At the end of February, the Aggies posted a 2-0 shutout against LSU, with Cydne Currie scoring both of A&M’s goals.
Freshman goalkeeper Kristin Arnold played all 90 minutes in goal for Team USA during the 5-0 win over SMU on Sunday. She will trade in her Team USA jersey and play with the Aggies on Wednesday night.
With Guerrieri serving as an assistant for the U-20’s, A&M assistant coaches Phil and Lori Stephenson will assume direction of the Aggies for the game.
“It has been a great honor to be an assistant coach for our U-20 National Team,” Guerrieri said. “I really respect and enjoy being around these players and coaches. But, even as cool as it feels to be wearing the red, white, and blue on the National Team staff this week, it’s still going to be a little strange for me to be on the opposing team’s bench Wednesday, coaching against my A&M players. I know that our A&M coaches (Phil and Lori Stephenson) are going to do their usual great job in leading the Aggies in this exhibition match.”
The gates will open at 5 p.m., one hour prior the start of the game. General admission for the match is $ 6. Children five years-of-age and younger will be permitted at no charge. A&M students can use their sports passes to gain admittance to the match.
