AUSTIN – No. 9 Texas A&M could not get it going offensively against Texas starter Austin Wood on Sunday afternoon as the No. 5 Longhorns completed the three-game sweep of the Aggies with a 9-1 win at Disch-Falk Field.
“I am disappointed with the way we played today,” A&M head coach Rob Childress said. “We have to find a way to put this weekend behind us because a new season, the postseason, starts next week.”
With the loss, A&M dropped to 41-15 overall and 13-13 in Big 12 play, while Texas improved to 42-14 and 21-6 in the league. The Aggies return to action in the Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday at 10 a.m.
A&M will also play Thursday and Saturday at Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City.
Wood (7-1) allowed just one run on five hits in eight-complete innings of work.
Texas threatened in the third but a sparkling defensive play ended the inning. With bases loaded and one out, Kyle Russell lifted a fly ball to medium-depth in right field. Brodie Greene caught the ball and gunned down Chais Fuller at the plate for an inning-ending double play.
A&M starter Scott Migl could not get out of a jam in the fourth and the Longhorns scored six runs in the inning to take the lead. Chance Wheeless singled and Bradley Suttle doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. Russell Moldenhauer lifted a sacrifice fly to deep left center to move both runners up a station. Preston Clark then belted a two-run home to left, his seventh of the year. After a walk and hit batter, Matt Ueckert replaced Migl and the first man he faced, Jordan Danks, hit a three run home rover the wall in right.
Fuller scored on a wild pitch by A&M reliever Kyle The beau and Suttle drove in two runs with a single in the sixth to make the score 9-0.
A&M scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch by Wood in the top of the eighth that scored Brian Ruggiano from third.
Migl (6-3) allowed five runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings of work.
