Texas A&M University comes in first in a list of top U.S. universities, as ranked by Washington Monthly magazine.
A&M outpaces all other universities in a list touted as an alternative to a similar compilation from U.S. News and World Report.
Texas A&M is followed by the University of California-Los Angeles, University of California-Berkeley, University of California-San Diego, and Penn State, respectively.
No other Texas universities are listed in the top 10. Only UT-Austin is listed in the 32 schools ranked by the publication.
In addition to A&M and UT, Iowa State was the only other Big 12 Conference school ranked.
Washington Monthly says its list is based on a university's contribution to public interest.
The magazine says that distinction sets its list apart from U.S. News and World Report and its list based on prestige.
