COLLEGE STATION, Texas— Among the degree candidates at the Texas A&M commencement exercises this Friday and Saturday (May 11-12) at Reed Arena are 92 Aggie student-athletes.
“I am so proud of these young men and women for earning a degree from Texas A&M,” Dr. John Thornton, Interim Director of Athletics for Texas A&M, said. “These student-athletes have put in a lot of time, effort and dedication to reach this goal. Their families and the people who have supported them throughout their lives are to be congratulated as well.”
“We talk about Building Champions in academics, athletics and community support and this pertains to all areas of life,” Thornton said. “Many of these student-athletes have participated through Aggie Athletes Involved, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and just going out on their own to speak and interact with young people and schools in our community. They are excellent role models and great representatives of Texas A&M. We are all very proud of them.”
In the school year 2011-12, 174 Aggie student-athletes have earned their degrees and 374 student-athletes were recently honored at the Champs Banquet, sponsored by Carolyn and the late Tommie E. Lohman, for achieving a 3.0 or higher during the 2011 calendar year and 46 of those posted a perfect 4.0 for at least one semester.
On the various playing fields, five Aggie teams have won Big 12 Championships thus far this school year with women’s soccer, women’s swimming and diving, women’s indoor track and field and men’s indoor track and field along with men’s golf have added to the trophy case. The men’s and women’s outdoor track and field squads are competing this weekend in the Big 12 Championships, and the Aggie baseball team has won the Big 12 Championship Tournament the past two years and the 2012 championship will be held in Oklahoma City later in May.
The men’s and women’s tennis programs are both competing in the NCAA Championships this weekend and look to make a deep run. The women’s golf team teed off today at the NCAA Regional Tournament. The men’s golf team, currently ranked No. 11 in the land, will compete at the NCAA Regionals with hopes of making another run at a national title. Baseball and softball will advance to NCAA post-season play. Meanwhile, the men’s outdoor track and field team is currently ranked No. 2 in the country and the women’s outdoor track and field squad is ranked No. 8 in the land and both squads will be looking for a fourth straight National Championship.
In National Championship conversations, the women’s equestrian squad brought home the overall national title as well as the national women’s western equestrian championship.
Just missing national titles, but making a lot of noise in their respective NCAA Championships, the women’s indoor track and field team finished tied for fifth and the men’s indoor track and field squad finished tied for eighth. In the pool and diving well, the women’s swimming and diving team finished sixth at the NCAA Championships and the men’s swimming and diving program finished 13th at nationals. The women’s basketball team finished tied for second in the Big 12 standings and reached the NCAA Championships for the seventh straight year and finished ranked No. 12 and reached the NCAA Sweet 16. The men’s cross country team finished 18th at the NCAA Championships and women’s soccer finished 21st in the final poll and reached the NCAA second-round. The women’s volleyball squad reached the NCAA Championship second-round and the Aggie football team won a bowl game as well.
All ceremonies are open to the public at Reed Arena without need of tickets according to university officials.
