A&M well represented at U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Eugene

EUGENE, OR -- A collection of 18 athletes with ties to Texas A&M track and field will take part in the U.S. Olympic Trials over the course of the next two weekends (June 22 to July 1) at Hayward Field as the United States Olympic team is selected from the top three finishers in each event.

Action from the meet will air on NBC Sports Network on Friday (8 to 10 p.m. CT), and then on NBC over the weekend (7-8 p.m. on Saturday, 6-7 p.m. on Sunday).

Next week the NBC Sports Network has coverage on Monday (8-10 p.m.), Thursday (8-10 p.m.) and Friday (5-7 p.m.). NBC will have the final weekend coverage on Saturday (8-9 p.m.) and Sunday (6-7 p.m.)

There will be eight current Aggies competing at the Olympic Trials with Laura Asimakis (Javelin), Ashley Collier (100/200), Dominique Duncan (100/200), Donique’ Flemings (100H), Prezel Hardy, Jr. (100/200), Sam Humphreys (Javelin), Michael Preble (800), and Natosha Rogers (10,000).

Jessica Beard (400), Porscha Lucas (200), Tyron Stewart (Long jump), Jeneba Tarmoh (100/200) are four former A&M athletes in the Olympic Trials field. A couple of incoming Aggies, who recently won USA Junior titles, competing in Eugene will include Aldrich Bailey (400) and Shelbi Vaughan (Discus).

Four other athletes who have been training in College Station that are in the Olympic Trials field include Noah Bryant (Shot put), Aries Merritt (110H), LaShaunte’a Moore (100/200) and Ariana Ince (Javelin).

The first final involving an A&M athlete will occur of Friday as Rogers races in a field of 24 for the women’s 10,000-meter final, which is scheduled to start at 7:20 p.m. (PST). Rogers debut season in the 25-lap race has included a NCAA Championship earlier this month after winning the Big 12 title in May during her initial race over this distance.

Qualifying rounds in the field events on Friday includes the women’s discus for Vaughan and the men’s long jump for Stewart.

On the track, Friday’s first round of action includes the 400 for Bailey and Beard, the 800 for Preble, 100 hurdles for Flemings and the opening round of the women’s 100 for Collier, Duncan, Moore and Tarmoh.

Humphreys has his qualifying round of the javelin on Saturday along with Bryant in the shot put while Hardy has his first round of the 100. The semifinal and final will be contested in the women’s 100 and 100 hurdles on Saturday as well as semifinal action in the 400 and 800.
