LONDON --- Texas A&M sophomore Cammile Adams posted the highest Olympic Games finish by a current Aggie swimmer by earning fifth place in the 200-meter butterfly on Wednesday.

Adams, from Cypress, Texas, touched the wall in a time of 2:06.78 as she charged in the final 50 meters with a sizzling split of 32.23. Adams’ final 50 time was bettered only by gold medalist Liuyang Jiao of China. It was the third Olympic finals appearance by a current A&M swimmer in program history, and her fifth-place finish just edged out the previous high finish of sixth by teammate Breeja Larson from earlier in the week.

Jiao won in an Olympic record time of 2:04.06 and she was trailed by Mireia Belmonte Garcia of Spain (2:05.25), Natsumi Hoshi of Japan (2:05.48), Adams’ USA teammate Kathleen Hersey (2:05.78), Adams, Jemma Lowe of Great Britain (2:06.80), Zsuzsanna Jakabos of Hungary (2:07.33) and Zige Liu of China (2:07.77).

In other action involving current or former A&M swimmers, 2010 senior Julia Wilkinson of Canada advanced to the 100-meter free semifinals where she placed 13th with a time of 54.25 and did not advance to the final. Sophomore Lili Ibanez placed 25th in the 100 free prelims with a time of 55.71 and did not advance.
