Aggie Baseball’s Naquin and Stripling Receive Class Star Awards

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Senior pitcher Ross Stripling and junior outfielder Tyler Naquin of the Texas A&M Baseball team won the Class Star Award for Athletics in their respective classes Monday as chosen by the Texas A&M Class Councils.

Stripling, who is originally from Southlake, Texas, won the Class of 2012 award after a record-setting season on the diamond last year. He led the nation in wins with a 14-2 record, posted a 2.29 ERA with 113 strikeouts, held his opponents to a .202 batting average and recorded four saves. All of this combined to help him be selected as an All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings (First Team), Collegiate Baseball (Third Team) and College Baseball Insider (Honorable Mention).

Naquin, who hails from Spring, Texas, took home the athletics award for the Class of 2013 following a breakout season as a sophomore last spring. He garnered All-America honors from College Baseball Insider (First Team), American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings (Second Team) and Collegiate Baseball (Second Team), in addition to being named Big 12 Player of the Year (Coaches, Daily Oklahoman and Waco Tribune-Herald), first team All-Big 12 and to the ABCA/Rawlings All-Midwest Region Team. All of these honors came following his season where he started 68 games, all in right field, led the nation in hits with 104 while pacing the Big 12 with a .381 batting average. He led the Aggies in runs scored with 68, while also posting 44 RBI, six stolen bases, seven outfield assists and 32 multi-hit games.

Class Star Awards are given by the Texas A&M Class Councils to one student from each class year, in five areas of excellence: Academics, Athletics, Leadership, Service and Spirit. To learn more about Class Councils, visit classcouncils.tamu.edu.

The Texas A&M Baseball team is currently ranked No. 6 in the nation, and will play its next game at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park on Tuesday against the Houston Baptist Huskies with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 pm.
