Aggie Freshman Shines at Kentucky Reining Cup

Laura Sumrall, a freshman on the Texas A&M equestrian team, rode to a third-place finish at the Ariat Kentucky Reining Cup’s World Freestyle Championship over the weekend before 5,000 fans inside Alltech Arena.

Sumrall’s score of 224.5 made her the both the top amateur and top female finisher, despite being the youngest competitor in the field.

“We are so proud of Laura,” A&M head coach Tana McKay said. “She has had a whirlwind of a semester, first winning a national championship with her teammates, then traveling to Kentucky and having an incredible ride at the Kentucky Reining cup, and now back to College Station to take finals.”

The Kentucky Reining Cup’s World Freestyle Championship is a crowd favorite year in and year out at the event. With spotlights on and music playing, freestyle gives spectators unique insight to the rider’s creativity and showmanship as they craft their own patterns to music while showcasing traditional western horsemanship.

Sumrall (Summit, Miss.) recently wrapped up her first season in Aggieland, one which saw her and her teammates claim the National Collegiate Equestrian Association championship and the A&M western riders grab their fourth consecutive NCEA title. She was undefeated in a pair of rides on the year.
