THE WOODLANDS, Texas—The 14th-ranked Texas A&M men’s golf team begins the home stretch of the regular season this week when the Aggies compete in The Woodlands All-American Intercollegiate on the Tournament Course at The Woodlands Country Club.
Two rounds are scheduled for Monday on the par-72, 7,018-yard course with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. (CT). Tuesday’s final round will tee off from the first and 10th holes at 8 a.m. (CT). The tournament marks the Aggies’ final tuneup before hosting the Aggie Invitational, April 21-22 at Traditions Club.
A&M, which is making its 23rd appearance in the tournament but its first since 1997, is one of three top-20 teams in the field. Joining the Aggies are 12th-ranked Arkansas, 16th-ranked Clemson, host Houston, Baylor, Lamar, Louisiana-Lafayette, North Texas, Notre Dame, Rice, SMU, Southeastern Louisiana, Texas State, Tulsa and UT Arlington.
“The All American was one of the great college tournaments in the past and we are excited to be part of its return to college golf,” head coach J.T. Higgins said. “The Tournament Course at The Woodlands hosted the Houston Open for over a decade and is now a stop on The Champions Tour. It is a great course. It is also close to home and starts us on a ‘Texas Swing’ where we do not leave the state the month of April. This is the time of year we want to start shining and gear up for the postseason.”
The All-American Intercollegiate was played every season from 1955 to 1990. After a one-year break in 1992, the tournament picked up and was played again from 1992 to 1997. The All-American Intercollegiate resumed in 2006 and was played each season through the 2008-09 campaign.
The Aggies enter the week playing some very strong golf, placing fifth or better in every tournament this spring and all but one tournament all year. Most recently, A&M shot a 2-over 866 en route to a third-place finish at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate in South Carolina.
Taking the course in Houston for Texas A&M will be seniors Jordan Russell (72.23 stroke average) and Geoff Shaw (73.67), junior Cameron Peck (71.80), sophomore Johannes Veerman (71.42) and true freshman Ty Dunlap (73.52). Redshirt freshman Greg Yates (71.76) will participate as an individual.
