COLLEGE STATION, TX -- The No. 21 Texas A&M softball team (15-7) defeated Monmouth (3-2) in walk-off style just before rain cancelled the second half of the doubleheader on day one of the Aggie Invitational.

A bases-loaded pitch hit sophomore Cassie Tysarczyk and walked in the winning run as a heavy rain began to fall and the Aggies took a 6-5 victory over the Hawks. Tysarczyk was 3-for-3 on the day with a home run, two singles, a run scored and two RBI.

The Aggies struggled defensively in the first inning, giving up three runs on an RBI single and a wild pitch as Monmouth grabbed an early 3-0 lead. With two outs in the bottom of the inning, senior Natalie Villarreal slammed a double into the left-field wall and flew home on a Meagan May single through the left side to narrow the deficit to 1-3. Villarreal scored three runs on two hits in four at-bats on the day.

Villarreal’s second run of the game came in the third inning on a three-run long ball over center field by junior Mel Dumezich. Villarreal and junior Sydney Shannon each reached on a fielder’s choice before Dumezich homered on the first pitch to give the Aggies their first lead of the game at 4-3.

Batting behind Dumezich in the lineup, Tysarczyk stepped up and also went yard, over the fence in left-center field to pull further ahead to a 5-3 lead.

Trailing by two runs, Monmouth tied the game in the top of the fifth with a two-run homer over left field.

The Aggies stranded senior Kelsea Orsak at third in the bottom of the sixth and took the game into the seventh, shutting down the side in the top of the inning.

In the top of the seventh, Villarreal sent her final hit of the night up the middle for a single and was joined on the bags by May, who drew a walk. Another walk, by Dumezich, loaded the bases before Tysarczyk was hit in the helmet to force Villarreal in for the game winner.
Dumezich (10-4) threw seven innings of relief, striking out 11 batters while giving up two earned runs on four hits and walking one.

Monmouth’s Jordan Barnett (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing six earned runs on eight hits and walking five.
