COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas Aggie football team hit the field once Tuesday as preseason practice rolled on.
Linebackers coach Mark Hagen and linebacker Steven Jenkins met with the media after practice, and Hagen had good things to say about his senior starter. "It's great having him out there. He's a very, very productive linebacker and he certainly knows the system and we're going to put him in a lot of positions to make some plays for us."
One thing Hagen thinks Jenkins does need to work on is his vocal leadership. "Steven's the type of guy who doesn't say a whole lot but leads by example. The thing I'm trying to do is get him to talk more because these guys certainly respect his game."
Jenkins agrees. "I don't really talk much. I lead by example and show guys what needs to be done and how it should be done."
Jenkins missed spring football with a shoulder injury but is good to go for the fall. He switched numbers from 45 last season to 8 this year, but says he had his eyes on another single-digit before the 2012 season. "I tried to get two (Johnny Manziel's number) last year, but that didn't work out," Jenkins joked.
The linebackers will be young this season behind Jenkins and junior Donnie Baggs. "There are going to be growing pains. That's just part of dealing with young guys," said Hagen. "We're trying to reduce those mental errors and those guys are all working hard."
