FLUSHING, N.Y. -- Texas A&M women’s tennis players suffered first round losses on the opening day of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships today at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

The A&M doubles team of Stefania Hristov and Tina Stancu fell to seventh-ranked Lorraine Guillermo and Khunpak Issara of Pepperdine, 8-3, in the first round of doubles, and No. 2 seed Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar suffered a 6-1, 6-2 setback to 11th-ranked Danielle Lao of USC in the first round of singles.

“Today was a tough one for the Aggie ladies,” A&M coach Howard Joffe said. “Cristina was beaten by an awfully talented Southern Cal player. Cris’ effort, resolve and composure were good, and hopefully tomorrow the outcome will be better.

“Tina and Stefania also competed hard. They are a good team that needs more experience playing together. Again, tomorrow will afford them that chance.”

The Aggies will compete in the consolation bracket beginning Friday. Times and opponents have not been posted but will be published online at itatennis.com as soon as they become available.

Live scoring of the tournament will be available at itatennis.com. In addition, Ken Thomas of RadioTennis.com will be on site throughout the week starting Thursday, providing a live broadcast beginning at 10:15 a.m. (ET) each day.
