COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The Texas A&M Aggies received their game assignments for the 2013 Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park, the Houston Astros announced on Tuesday. The Aggies’ slate features games against the Houston Cougars, Rice Owls and North Carolina Tar Heels in the tournament which runs from March 1-3.
Adding Rice and North Carolina to the schedule means the Aggies will face 14 teams that advanced to the NCAA Championship last year in a total of 31 games.
Texas A&M opens the tournament on Friday with a 7 p.m. contest against Houston. The Maroon and White lead the all-time series 109-55-1. The teams did not meet in 2012, but split a pair of games in 2011 with the Aggies winning 11-4 at Minute Maid Park and the Cougars winning 3-2 in College Station.
The Aggies will once again be featured in the marquee spot on Saturday night as they face Rice in a 7 p.m. game. Texas A&M owns a 177-96-2 advantage in the all-time series. In 2012, Rice won the lone contest, 5-4, in College Station.
Texas A&M ends the tournament with a 2:30 p.m. game against North Carolina on Sunday. The only two previous meetings came in the NCAA Championship with the Maroon and White winning both contests. The last time the Aggies and Tar Heels faced off was March 28, 1995 when the Aggies won a 7-0 decision at the NCAA Atlantic II Regional in Coral Gables, Fla. The only other meeting came in 1993 with Texas A&M registering a 14-2 victory at the NCAA Central I Regional at Olsen Field.
The Aggies open the 2013 season on Feb. 15 when they begin a three-game series with the UIC Flames at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
