Aggies Vie for U.S. Collegiate Championship

COLLEGE STATION, Texas—The No. 15 Texas A&M men’s golf team will compete Friday through Sunday at the U.S. Collegiate Championship, hosted by Georgia Tech.

“This is a great tournament for us to get to participate in,” Texas A&M men’s golf coach J.T. Higgins said. “It’s seriously run like a professional golf event - the ropes are all up, the course is in immaculate condition and everyone comes out to support it. It’s a first-class event all the way and it’s such a good golf course so it really tests your skills against some fierce competition.”

The seventh annual, 54-hole tournament will be held in Alpharetta, Ga., at the Golf Club of Georgia, which has played host to the Georgia Cup and U.S. Open Sectional qualifying tournaments. The teams will play on the Lakeside course, a par-72, 7,017 yard course which was named the “Best New Private Course in America” when it debuted in 1991.

“We think to be the best you’ve got to play the best,” Higgins added. “We try to play the best courses and all around the country in some of different conditions and grasses as well as trying to play the best teams from wherever they are.”

The Aggies 4 return to the course after last competing at the PING/Golfweek Preview Sept. 23-25 during which the team placed 13th. Senior Cameron Peck was the highest placing individual for A&M at the tournament, tying for 16th place.

In addition to Peck, the Aggies will be represented this weekend at the U.S. Collegiate Championship by sophomores Ty Dunlap and Greg Yates, junior Johannes Veerman and freshman Adria Arnaus.

Veerman is very familiar with the tournament as he returns as the defending individual champion from last season’s event when he shot a six-under par, three-round total of 210 to earn the field’s top spot.

“We’re excited about this weekend,” Higgins said. “I feel like this is a golf course we can win on and so we are going there expecting to play well.”

The first round will begin at 7:50 a.m. (CST) Friday. The Aggies are paired with Duke and Washington and will tee off from the first hole at 10:30 a.m. Live scoring for the event will be available at GolfStat.com.
