LUBBOCK, Texas—A Top 25 matchup between the Aggies of Texas A&M (No. 25) and the Red Raiders of Texas Tech (No. 23) came down to the final match at No. 6 singles where Texas Tech’s Francisco Zambon outlasted Aggie freshman Jeremy Efferding to give the edge to Texas Tech, 4-3, at the McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock late Saturday.
The Aggies fall to 12-10 on the year and 1-2 in Big 12 play while the Red Raiders are 13-6 on the year and 2-0 in the league and have won seven of their last nine matches.
The Aggies won the doubles point as Niall Angus and John Lewis battled for a 9-7 victory at No. 2 doubles and coupled with Colin Hoover and Alexis Klegou's 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles gave A&M the initial lead, 1-0.
A&M would extend the lead to 2-0 as Junior Ore continues his outstanding performance at No. 1 singles as he defeated No. 57 Gonzalo Escobar, 6-1, 6-2.
Tech would rally with three singles wins before Niall Angus outlasted Gabriel Wanderley, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 to tie the match at three points each.
At No.6 singles, freshman Efferding battled throughout forcing three sets but dropped the match, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 to Zambon.
The Aggies have a short turnaround as A&M hosts Notre Dame at 6 p.m. on Monday, Apr. 9 at the Mitchell Tennis Center on the Texas A&M campus.
