Aggies top rated team heading into Big 12 Indoor Championships

COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M will be the top rated team heading into the Big 12 Indoor Championship the Aggies play host to this weekend at the Gilliam Indoor Stadium. The A&M men are currently No. 3 in the nationally poll released by USTFCCCA on Monday while the Aggie women are No. 5 in the nation.

Four men’s teams in the Big 12 are currently ranked among the top 25. Behind A&M is No. 5 Texas, No. 14 Kansas State and No. 21 Oklahoma.

Meanwhile, there are five women’s teams in the Big 12 currently among the top 15. Following the Aggies is No. 7 Kansas, No. 11 Texas, No. 12 Texas Tech and No. 13 Iowa State.

The A&M men are the defending Big 12 Indoor team champions, having won its first indoor conference title since 1980 last season with a score of 134 points. That bettered runner-up Oklahoma by 28 points. The Aggie women were runner-up, 115.5 to 101, to host Nebraska last year after winning four consecutive Big 12 Indoor titles from 2007 to 2010.

Returning conference indoor champions for the Aggies include Joey Roberts in the 800 meters along with Michael Preble from the men’s 4 x 400. The A&M women return a pair of indoor champions from 4 x 400 relay members in Donique’ Flemings (2010) and Ibukun Mayungbe (2011). Top three medalists returning for the Aggies include Wayne Davis II (60 hurdles) and Preble (600 yards).

This season Texas A&M leads the Big 12 in 10 events, led by Ameer Webb who tops the conference in the 60 (6.66) and 200 (20.79). Other Big 12 leaders for the Aggies include Ashley Collier (60), Dominique Duncan (200), Ricky Babineaux (400), Preble (600y), Roberts (800), Laura Asimakis (pole vault), Babatunde Amosu (triple jump) and the men’s distance medley relay.

Big 12 action begins on Friday morning with the women’s pentathlon at 11 a.m. while the men’s heptathlon starts at 1 p.m. Prelims will open with the mile at 3 p.m. On Saturday finals will start at 3 p.m.
