HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- Jessie Plumlee hit a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th inning against Texas A&M to give the Bearkats a 9-8 win Tuesday at Don Sanders Stadium. Pinch runner Wyatt Powell scored the game winning run from third base.
Designated hitter Hayden Simerly led off the inning by legging out an infield single and Powell pinch ran for him. The sophomore stole second while first baseman Ryan O’Hearn was batting. O’Hearn then struck out but reached base on a wild pitch and Powell advanced to third.
The Aggies decided to intentionally walk right fielder Greg Olson to load the bases for Plumlee. The second baseman lined a ball that was caught in right field but the outfielder was unable to throw out Powell at home.
Alan Scott picked up his first win of the season after throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief. The junior didn’t allow any hits and issued just one walk.
Texas A&M got on the board first when catcher Troy Stein hit a solo homerun to left field in the second inning to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead. Stein hit a three-run homer off of starter Tyler Eppler last week in College Station.
The Bearkat offense strung some hits together in the second after starter Grayson Long issued a pair of free passes to start the inning. First baseman Ryan O’Hearn singled to tie the game 1-1. Right fielder Romeo Cortina doubled down the left field line to give the Kats the lead and chase the starter from the game. Reliever Kyle Martin gave up a single to second baseman Jessie Plumlee to give the Bearkats a 3-1 lead.
Designated hitter Hayden Simerly blew the game open in the third inning when he blasted a line drive, three-run homer over the right field wall. Cortina doubled and center fielder Colt Atwood singled to make the Bearkat lead 7-1.
Sam Houston added to their lead in the fourth after a pair of singles to lead off the frame. Left fielder Luke Plucheck got a hit on a squeeze bunt to score shortstop Carter Burgess from third and make the score 8-1.
The Aggies would then score runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to chip away the Kats lead and cut it to just one run.
Sam Houston was just one out away from winning 8-7 when left fielder Brandon Wood reached on an error by third baseman Kevin Miller. Back-to-back singles by the Aggies tied the game 8-8.
Simerly was 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Plumlee was 1-for-4 but drove in two runs.
SHSU now has wins over Texas, Rice, Houston, Baylor and Texas A&M this season.
The Bearkats will host Prairie View A&M Wednesday at Don Sanders Stadium at 6:30 p.m.
