COLLEGE STATION, TX -- Texas A&M head women’s swimming coach Steve Bultman signed five of CollegeSwimming.com’s top 100 recruits to national letters of intent and the impressive group will join the Aggies for the school’s inaugural season in the Southeastern Conference in 2012-13.
Joining the Aggies will be Claire Brandt (Dallas, Texas), Katherine Huff (Evans, Ga.), Romy Landeck (Sugar Land, Texas), Ashley McGregor (Pointe-Claire, Quebec, Canada) and Meredith Oliver (Tyler, Texas).
"I'm very pleased with our group of signees," Bultman said. "They're very excited to have chosen Texas A&M and we are excited to have them. I feel like they can all contribute to our team's continued improvement and some of these will contribute in a big way their freshman year."
Brandt, rated No. 63 in CollegeSwimming.com’s recruit ranking, has already qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 50 freestyle and the 100 back, and is the 2011 Short Course Junior National Champion in the 50 free. The NISCA All-American is a three-time Team MVP for the Greenhill School and she was also Greenhill’s Female Athlete of the Year. She is rated a five-star recruit (on a six-star scale) by SwimmingWorldMagazine.com.
“When I was looking for a college, I wanted to choose a place where I felt I could succeed academically and athletically, and above all, where I felt at home,” Brandt said. “A&M was that place for me. I love the traditions, the sense of community, the school, (coaches) Steve and Tanica (Jamison), and the girls on the team, and I am so excited to join them.”
Huff, rated No. 64 in CollegeSwimming.com’s recruit ranking, has achieved her Olympic Trials cut in the 100 freestyle, and saw action in the 50 and 100 free and the 200 backstroke at last summer’s ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships. A Georgia high school state champion, Huff has participated in the Zone Select Camp and the National Select Camp. Huff was Lakeside High School’s team MVP and the Aiken-Augusta Swim League’s team MVP, and she holds Lakeside school records in all eight high school events. She is rated a four-star recruit (on a six-star scale) by SwimmingWorldMagazine.com.
“I chose A&M because I felt like the university was the best fit for me,” Huff said. “I knew that I was looking for a family atmosphere and I found that in College Station.”
Landeck, ranked No. 67 by CollegeSwimming.com, achieved her 2012 Olympic Trials cuts in the 200 breast and the 200 IM. Landeck represented the First Colony Swim Team on the NCSA All-American Team that competed in Japan in September of 2011. A NISCA All-American, Landeck was the team captain at Clements High School and was a four-time medalist as a junior and senior, including wins in the 200 IM and 100 breast in 2012.
“I chose A&M because it just felt like home,” Landeck said. “I felt a connection not only with every single girl on the team, but with the coaches as well. I can't wait to finally represent the Aggies!”
McGregor checked in at No. 24 in CollegeSwimming.com’s ranking after earning four medals at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. McGregor won gold in the 200 breaststroke and bronze in the 100 breast, and helped Canada to silver in the 400 medley relay and bronze in the 400 free relay.
“I loved the dynamics of the team and coaches, and I felt like home as soon as I stepped on campus,” McGregor said.
Oliver, ranked No. 92 in the recruit ranking, has achieved her Olympic Trials cuts in the 200 IM and the 400 IM. She is a NISCA All-American in the 100, 200 and 500 freestyles and the 200 IM. A team captain for Tyler Lee High School, Oliver was Class 5A Region II Swimmer of the Meet four straight years and she was a three-time medalist at the Class 5A state championships, with a pair of runner-up finishes in the 100- and 200-yard freestyles as a senior.
“I love all the traditions at Texas A&M and I feel at home when I am on the campus,” Oliver said. “Also, I will get to compete at a high level of swimming competition while still receiving a top-flight education.”
